If you’ve been on eBay recently you’ll notice that a lot of gift cards are selling for more than face value. No, people aren’t nuts. Thanks to Microsoft Live giving crazy cashback back on eBay purchases (it’s currently at 30% at time of post).

What happens is somebody will buy a gift card for face value for $500. Sell it for $570 or so. After eBay fees they’ll make roughly $25. However the buyer is getting 30% cashback from Microsoft ($171). The only hiccup is it takes 60 days for you to get your cashback from Microsoft. However, you can take that gift card you just bought and flip it again like the seller did. Money all around…!

In the end both the sellers and buyers make out pretty well. It’s Microsoft that’s paying for the free ride.
