Last month I got 3 checks from Chase totaling $50. Two Chase fraud detector checks at $20 and one payment protector at $10. I read the terms and decide if it’s a free trial, it’s basically free money if I cancel within 30 days. Even if I forget to cancel in 30 days, the cost of these plans per month is less than the check they give so you still slightly profit if you forget to cancel after 30 days.

I figured it would be a big hassle to cancel but I called Chase Fraud Detector at 1-800-774-8414 and waited on hold about 30 seconds. I then had to sit through a speech about great Fraud Detector was and how I’m a bozo if I don’t keep it. Just keep repeating “no thanks” and you should be fine. The CSR cancelled both my accounts and I should be receiving two cancellation letters soon. I then called Chase Payment Protector at 1-888-314-4371 and guess what? No sales pitch about why I should keep the program. They just asked why I wanted to cancel and I said I don’t carry the balance so there’s no point in keeping it.

Seeing how easy the free money was, I wished I didn’t throw away all those other checks from Citi and previous Chase checks.

  1. I did the same thing you did. Made a profit of about $80 (have 4 or 5 credit cards with Chase). I thought it was a nice payback for all the fees Chase has charged me in the past. However, the CSR wasn’t quite as understanding. I told him I wanted to cancel because I already have the service thru Discover Card (which I do). He told me flat out to stop cashing the promotional checks. So I told him that I didn’t realize Chase’s service was similar to the one I had with Discover (sort of a half truth). In which he told me he highly doubted that. I’ve never had a CSR get so pissed off, it was like he was writing the promotional checks to me! He’s probably had a lot of these calls and couldn’t take it anymore. I got his name, Scott at extentsion 5321, so if anyone gets him to cancel your account, be warned, he’s gonna blow!

If Chase wants to keep clogging my mailbox with their promotional checks, I will keep cashing them. If they don’t want me to cash them, then don’t send them to me.

  2. You go Chris….

    That’ll show them

I didnt even get a check….well actually I did but I threw it away cuz said eh not in a hurry…next thing I know I see on my bill is the PPP charge..snuck in there…lol….now I dont really care cuz at first its only a couple of dollars because my balance is very low….and im in the military so Im prolly gonna end up using it. Months later…I get the sign we are gonna deploy so I opt to use activate my PP, that they illegally snuck on.

Been deployed for a couple of months now

For me they just still are charging me to high hell….even though I activated my Payment Plan Protector.

Ok, obviously its just a scheme scam trap, to add more profit to their pockets by not providing the service.

LOL….well if they wanna act like that I tell you it’ll be a cold day in hell before they get anymore of my money.

So if any body who is a chase member sees this scam…watch the hell out. Its definitely not legitimate. I wish I could find a class action lawsuit to jump onto.

  3. Need class action lawsuit against Chase’s Protector Payment. Paid monthly payment for payment protection since 90′s of $181 a month, in 2003 became permanently disabled, have to submit a form from doctor every 3 months even though I am PERMANENTLY disabled, told me in October 2008 they couldn’t read his writing, cancelled my payment protection payments. Now I am in default and can’t get the payment protection reactivated. Stuck between a rock and a hard place.

  4. Phyllis, what state do you live in? I am attorney investigating this ridiculous plan.

  5. I got a letter from Chase “congratulating” me on enrolling in Payment Protector. Since I don’t carry a balance, I don’t need it. I called Chase immediately and told them to cancel it. They did. However, a week later I got my monthly statement showing a charge for $48.04 for Payment Protector. I called again and was told that because I had canceled the plan during the current billing cylce, the “computer system” could not delete the charge right away. I was also reassured that my account would be credited the next billing cycle. Sounds ok on the surface, but it is really an unfair business practice because if I just pay the current bill, including the $48.04
I have in effect loaned that money to Chase for free, whereas Chase can relend it to its customers at 20%! If I don’t pay the $48.04 Chase charges ME the 20%! If I dispute the charge, I have to waste my time writing a letter to Chase (on top of navigating through a voice mail system, being put on hold and complaining to Chase personnel on the phone). Thus, no matter what I do, I lose–all because Chase enrolled me in the plan without my knowledge or consent. Now, imagine Chase sending out hundreds of thousands, if not millions of letters, congratulating its customers on enrolling in the Payment Protector Plan. Think how many people don’t read their statements closely and just pay the whole bill
or throw away the letter as junk mail without reading it. Now I understand how Chase was able to afford to buy Washington Mutual! This is just plain THEFT, yet Chase is allowed to get away with it. It seems to me that a class action is warranted.

  6. I have the Chase Payment Protector and have use it several times for Moving and Disability with the moving it was easy to use I just called in and they actived my benefits I had 4 months with no intrest and no pp fees I didn’t have to make my payments but the rep that I talked her name was Tammy she had been with the company for 6 yrs told me if I wanted to I could and it went all to the principle. When I was on Disability I had to have my Dr. fill out a paper every month but it was worth it not having to worry about my credit again I was able to sen in some payments and actually paid off my account so I am glad for great customer service and to Tammy

  7. For those who have received unauthorized charges for Chase’s payment protector plan, you should file a complaint with the Comptroller of the Currency, which has jurisdiction over banks. You can file a complain online at http://www.helpwithmybank.com. I filed a complaint and they called Chase with my complaint. If everyone who is scammed by Chase complains, maybe then Chase will stop this fraud.

If you don’t carry a balance, then how did Payment Protector bill you $48.04? Payment Protector doesn’t bill you unless you’re revolving a balance. Secondly, you HAD to have signed up in some way wheter intentional or not in order for it to be billed. They don’t get your credit card number by calling Chase. You’re story is b.s. Not the program. If people would pay attention to what they’re doing, they wouldn’t have these “surprise” charges on their bills. Take responsibility folks!!
P.S. The FEDS purchased Wamu and within hours turned around and sold to Chase so they wouldn’t have to deal with it.

“If you don’t carry a balance, then how did Payment Protector bill you $48.04? Payment Protector doesn’t bill you unless you’re revolving a balance.”

WRONG! Today I received a statement from Chase showing the only activity on my account was “PAYMENT PROTECTOR 1-888-314-4371 — .01″.

That’s right! One whole penny’s worth of account activity by PAYMENT PROTECTOR on an account without a balance . . . an account that’s always paid-in-full whenever/if I make a purchase.

As if that penny isn’t ludicrous enough, the finance charge on the $.01 is $1.50, making my New Balance $1.51 and the Total Minimum Payment Due $1.51. So . . . [**gr-r**]

Of course, I’ll be phoning that PAYMENT PROTECTOR phone number during office hours tomorrow . . . not only because I’ve never carried a balance on my Chase card, but especially because I’ve been retired for years and years and, therefore, I certainly do not need–nor appreciate!–the possibility of Chase’s so-called “PAYMENT PROTECTOR” chalking up MORE $.01/penny transactions PLUS 150 times that much in finance charges!

  10. Any lawyer interested in hearing and pursuing this PPP scam, please contact me at iocmayroc@sbcglobal.net. We have been “slammed” to the tune of about $2,000+. Thanks.

  11. guys just to help you save a lot of money from the chase payment protector plan….. i have tried it before… and they charge .99 cents per $100 of your ending monthly statement BALANCE….. so if u want the program in your account while not paying for a single thing… this is what i do so i don’t pay for anything…. pay your balances in full before your statement prints.. .so if your accounts cycle date is every 5th of the month be sure to pay it off before the 5th pay it off before your statement prints so that you have the back up plan in case u experience any of their qualifying events just pay off your balances in full before your statement prints since this is a PLAN that goes by your ending monthly STATEMENT BALANCE…. me and my friends here in OREGON are enjoying it and not paying a single thing for the plan and i suggest you all do it too… its a nice back up plan that if you bank SMARTLY you won’t pay for a single cent of this…. BE SMART and OUTSMART THE BANK that’s why they make u sign the forms they send out after you apply for the program u can use that to defend yourself if ever they suddenloy charge you when your balance is ZERO

  12. I never even signed up for this plan. I pay my Chase bill on-line and do not look at the statements. Yes, shame on me. I checked my statement last night and found that I had been billed monthly by Payment Protector since late-2008. I called Chase which told me they could credit me for the month of Oct. only and I had to settle this with Payment Protector which I called this morning. I said I never requested or authorized this. I am a stay at home mom and have no income (aside from my husbands and he is not on my Chase card), so why would I sign up for something I don’t even need. They said I probably got a 30-day trial in the mail and claimed these were legitimate charges which I could not get back. I called back Chase, they put me through to a dispute manager who simply transfered me back to Payment Protection. This is a vicious cycle.

  13. What’s interesting about this Chase Fraud Detector program is that you don’t have to be the primary account holder when you enroll.

But you do have to be the primary account holder when you want to cancel.

Isn’t that interesting? I thought it was.

  14. Cancel my subscribtion today 10/21/09

  15. In all of these cases where the person never enrolled in the Chase program, was it ever explained by Chase as to how they show up as having purchased the program? Just curious.

  16. FYI
I have the “Payment Protector” for my Chase credit card. About 60 days after I stop working I called Payment Protector to file a claim the service will not cover for past months will file a claim from the day I called.

  17. “In all of these cases where the person never enrolled in the Chase program, was it ever explained by Chase as to how they show up as having purchased the program? Just curious.”

What they do is fraudulently sign you up when you activate the card…even if you say no

I tried to pin them down on that and they refused to answer just kept saying they would never authorize it without permission. I told them I *never* authorized it and one of their employees was committing fraud by doing just that. I won’t play games with them..any more unauthorized charges show up, I will just cancel the card and file a complain with the AG. Most likely will cancel the card anyway since I just got it and don’t really need it.
I mean if they will try and pull this what else will they try to do next time??

  18. chase payment protector plan helped a lot. when I I got hospitalized, they even didn’t charge me any late fees when I can’t afford to pay my credit card bill. Right now, I’m still pay for the protection I really need. Just for a sure back up if there is something unforeseen should happen (hope not). It’s just a matter of reading the welcome kit and being responsible for what you spent on card. Just be sure to pay what you owe and Chase will help. Don’t use your card much that you can no longer pay.. That’s it!!

  19. TO all those who testify to the validity and wonder of this program: Do you work for the company?

I image you or someone you know does…food for thought folks.
I cancelled my account yesterday and am planning to take them to court over this program. I was tricked into signing up w/ slight of words. those guys are trained to talk fast and use spin thier words. after telling them i wanted to cancel, the guy i talked to said.. “You understand that if you ever get hurt, lose your job” yada yada yada..”are you sure you want to stay enrolled”… i was expecting [are you sure you want to CANCEL”

    F*%k U chase payment protector

  20. I just gave a call to the chase payment protector, the customer service person on the phone kept blah blah blah and I just kept saying just cancel my service. Don’t even answer them with yes or no, because they would trick u in keeping the service. I just said it in bold that i would like to cancel the service, that’s all. lol

  21. as an employee of the company that handles the chase fraud detector I find it offensive that I am forced to deal with customers who’s only desire is screw us over…WE ARE NOT THE CHASE EXECUTIVES!!! no one realizes that by doing this you are actually putting very nice, friendly, hard-working people out of a job because the more people that cancel results in less people with a job, yes, some people are not the best to be talking with on the phone, but we also deal with people just like you everyday and it’s sickening… so the end result isn’t you taking money out of J.P. Morgan Chase’s pocket, but the people who go to work everyday just to make it by, and end up jobless because some jerk thought he/she’d try and scam a few bucks out of a company we don’t even work for…

  22. oh, and i would also like to set the record straight… the people you call to cancel you fraud detector service ARE NOT THE PEOPLE WHO “TRICKED” YOU INTO SIGNING UP!!! We only have access to your account once you have been signed up BY CHASE EMPLOYEES… and yes… they talk VERY fast, it is to confuse you, i hate chase employees, they make us look bad, and make our job a lot more difficult because they only tell you what you want to hear, not the truth… so, please, please, please… start treating the employees that actually talk to the customers with some basic human decency… because i will let you in on a little secret, there have been suicides at our office as a DIRECT result of “people” that treat us like some form of human decay that has to be dealt with, and the saddest part about it is that it was over an $8 charge that YOU ACCEPTED… think about it…

  23. I just noticed this ridiculous “Payment Protector” charge on my account. It looks like they tacked it on for the past 3 months, hopefully not longer. I pay the full balance automatically every month and don’t waste my time checking every small charge on all my monthly statements.

I absolutely never signed up for this.

I have absolutely no use for this “scheme”. A 1% charge on all credit card use for some insurance I will never use?! I handle my finances and credit card responsibly, paying off the full balance every month. This is reflected in my credit score which is about as high as you can possibly get.

If I get a runaround on this in canceling and getting these fraudulent charges back, I will be pursuing legal and regulatory channels. They have scammed the wrong person.

  24. I just received a refund of 1663.52 for the unwanted plan since 2006. If you call the Payment protector and Chase Dispute department they will make Payment protector look into the case. If you take the time and make a stink you can get you money back!

  25. Chase payment protector is good if you carry a moderate to very high balance and you actually use to the benefits to recoup the cost. However, you will need to carefully read the fine print to be able to access the benefits without issues. You have to remember it’s an insurance company, so they will look for any error or lack of information to deny. If all info is present and you follow through on forms in a timely manner, it works fine. They even send out a form to let you know you have 30 days to submit your info and then a warning letter after that with another 10 day grace period. Most people don’t know what they’ve signed up for nor do they realize the effort and detail it takes to submit a claim to be paid! No, I do not work for Chase. But, they have paid several payment protector benefits to me over the last 10 years as a an original Chase (not WaMu) customer. As far as being signed up without permission, I do not agree with that at all. That can be refunded but the hassle is wearing on us as customers! sigh
