Today I’ve decided I want to earn a million miles with American Airlines and earn gold status for life… or at least start on the process. Why do I want to do this?
- American Airlines recognizes all miles earned for the million mile mark, not just miles earned from flying (unlike United). This means I can use bank/credit card/etc. bonuses to attain that goal.
- I have miles here and there with every airline, it’s time to consolidate and just earn miles with one
- I chose American Airlines because they fly a lot of flights out of my three nearby airports: Newark International, La Guardia, and JFK.
In a serious of posts entitled “Million Miles” you can follow along on my progress of 0 miles to a million miles. I’ll detail my progress and the bonuses I use to help me along the way. You can use the information to pad your own mileage account.
Here’s the first one:
UFB Direct
11,000 miles with their Mileage Checking
6,000 miles with their Mileage Savings
Hint: Use PayPal to meet the direct deposit requirements.

Just be careful. After four years of business travel, I’m about a quarter way there. I’m using a Citibank AAdvantage Mastercard. I’m using the dining programs, and often flying on American Airlines. However, there is no promise that the Million Miler program will always be around. Worse yet, at any point American could decide to do what airlines like United and Delta have done — only count actual flight miles.
So I think your quest is a fun one. I, too, would enjoy bragging rights as a Million Miler, but just keep in mind that they have the ability to change rules any time they want. Just be careful when you’re at 996,000 miles.
