1,000 loans on Kiva!

October 29th, 2008

Today I lent out my 1,000th loan. It was made to the Sugran Rafiq Mashi Group from Pakistan. I hope they are able to achieve everything they set out to do and hope them the best of luck. You can see my lender profile here.

In June of this year when I started to loan I had 6 loans total with Kiva. To go from 6 loans to 1,000 in a span of 5 months meant I averaged roughly 200 loans per month. That’s how much I truly believe in this cause.

However in the next few months I’m going to be scaling down my loaning activity. I’m not as comfortable having that much funds in Kiva anymore. Kiva’s rise in popularity also means my funds aren’t needed as much as loans are still getting funded in record times. If I do conribute to a loan it will only be at the minimum $25 from here on out as I want to give others a chance to get in and the risk of default is also diversified.

I’m selling a piece of the subprime mess memorabilia on eBay.

October 22nd, 2008

I recently found a pack of sticky notes from New Century Mortgage Corporation and decided to auction it off on eBay.

I think I’m going to sell random things on eBay to collect more feedback as I’ve got spare time on my hands these days and way too much clutter in my house.

My FICO score is 597!

October 18th, 2008

The last time I checked my FICO score 6 months ago it was hovering somewhere around 700 give or take 25. Today I decided to check it and my score is 597!

The #1 reason my score is so low can be attributed to the fact that I’m carrying roughly $30,000-$34,999 in balances (at 0% apr of course). I guess my score will suffer until March 2009 when I pay off all the balances when the 0% promotional APRs expiring. This is probably the lowest my score has ever been but I don’t plan on making any credit related decisions anytime soon.

According to Yodlee Moneycenter, over 60% of my credit limit is being utilized.

ING cuts rate on Orange Savings account to 2.75%

October 10th, 2008

With all the talk of the Federal Funds rate being cut yet again soon I guess some banks (like ING Direct) are pre-emptively cutting their interest rates.

I logged onto my ING Direct account this morning to see that dreaded line.

Oct 9, 2008 Interest Rate Change to 2.716% (2.75% APY)

If I had logged on yesterday I guess this post would’ve also been written then. The curreny feeling is people who save money are getting the shafted with low interest rates and higher inflation.

3.00% to 2.75% is roughly an 8% drop. I earned about $40 in interest from ING Direct last month so I guess dropping yields don’t affect me THAT much.

So I joined the American Express Blue Cash club.

October 4th, 2008

My brother has been using the American Express Blue Cash card for some time and I decided to switch over. In the past it wouldn’t have been worthwhile for me to switch over as I didn’t charge much. However the times have changed and I’ll finally make the plunge.

The American Express Blue Cash card gives you for year-to-date expenditures 1% at gas stations/supermarkets/drug stores and 0.5% everywhere else up to $6,500. Then for year to date expenditures $6,500.01 and up you’ll earn 5% at gas stations, supermarkets, and drug stores plus 1.5% everywhere else. Obviously this card is geared towards high spenders and will only benefit people who spend enough in the 2nd rewards tier.

Here’s why the Blue Cash card works for me. Every month I charge roughly $3,000 to $3,500 to a variety of my credit cards. That means I can hit the 2nd tier of rewards in only 2 months if I use my Amex card for all my purchases. The card also comes with no annual fee. The 1.5% cashback on everything is a big plus for me as a lot of my spending is categorized as a general purchase. There’s also no cap on the amount you can earn in a given year. One of the factors here is also convenience. I don’t have to keep track of multiple reward cards and some cards cap rewards at $300 or so annually.

Here’s the rewards breakdown:

  • Assume I’ll earn 0.5% on the first $6,500 for general purchases which will put me into the second tier. That’s $32.50 in cashback.
  • Aproximately $3,000+ per month in general purchases so roughly $36,000 total spend. Discount the first $6,500 in charges and that’s $29,500 that earns 1.5%. That’s $442.50 in cashback.
  • I spend roughly $200 on supermarket and gas purchases a month. That’s $2,400 annually. At 5% that’s $120 in cashback. The card also came with a promotional 0% APR on purchases and a decent credit limit so I can earn a little bit of extra money off the float from my spending.

Add up the totals and I can expect somewhere around $595 in cashback each year with the same patterns of spending.

How to make money selling gift cards on eBay!

October 2nd, 2008

If you’ve been on eBay recently you’ll notice that a lot of gift cards are selling for more than face value. No, people aren’t nuts. Thanks to Microsoft Live giving crazy cashback back on eBay purchases (it’s currently at 30% at time of post).

What happens is somebody will buy a gift card for face value for $500. Sell it for $570 or so. After eBay fees they’ll make roughly $25. However the buyer is getting 30% cashback from Microsoft ($171). The only hiccup is it takes 60 days for you to get your cashback from Microsoft. However, you can take that gift card you just bought and flip it again like the seller did. Money all around…!

In the end both the sellers and buyers make out pretty well. It’s Microsoft that’s paying for the free ride.
