April 27th Friday Unwind

April 27th, 2007

Friday unwinds are where I showcase interesting/funny/whatever random stuff I encounter.

My girlfriend sent me this one. What’s it like to play one of the hardest levels on Mario?

Enjoy the weekend. I’ll leave you off with Bill Wither’s “Ain’t No Sunshine”.

I received the new American Express Platinum Business card today.

April 26th, 2007

The new card is a lot more vibrant and better looking than the old card. See image below, old card is on top, new card is on the bottom.

Tuesday Roundup

April 24th, 2007

There was no Monday Morning Roundup as I hosted the Carnival of Personal Finance yesterday.

For the carnival I selected about 20 or so posts were selected for mention. Predictably I received some e-mails from bloggers as to why their post wasn’t included. The reason for this most likely is that there were just too many submissions. I wanted about 20 or so posts because I feel that carnival/festival hosts generally like to include every post that’s sent in just to get the link back from the blogger. In my humble opinion, this limits the carnival’s appeal in that it just becomes a huge 100+ link list.

Plonkee feels that “reading about investments, and monitoring my spending, and opening and closing new accounts” is unpaid overtime for his/her finances and doesn’t see an obvious return. I think that all those activities do net you a return in that you make sounder investing decisions, spend your money wiser, and overall your finances are in better shape.

Sun does a comprehensive look at lifecycle funds funds from Vanguard, Fidelity, and T.R. Price. The Vanguard funds, has 0.5% less in expense ratio, but lagged 2% in performance compared to T.R. Price’s fund.

Trent over the simple dollar got a speeding ticket for going 6 miles over the 55 mph speed limit on an empty road. Something is just wrong there.

Here’s a fun little calculator from CNN Money to see how you stack up to other people in your age group. Take it with a grain of salt as it doesn’t factor in a lot of considerations. Apparently the average net worth of other 20 year olds is $400. Too many new BMWs not yet paid off eh?

Carnival of Personal Finance #97

April 23rd, 2007

The Carnival of Personal Finance at last comes to Endless Gibberish. What a treat too considering today also happens to be my 20th birthday :D . Enjoy the carnival while I enjoy my birthday at my 3 hour accounting class.

We’ll highlight three of my favorite posts first

Hazzard over at Everybody Loves Your Money has a refreshing and hilarious list of of the top 13 money saving ideas of all time. My favorite funny idea? Stop using toilet paper all together.

Grad Money Matters has a post entitled “Attitudes Towards Debt, Bills and Credit Card Arbitrage” which I particularly like because his main point is “Every
person has to find his/her comfort zone, when it comes to financial dealings. And should try and maximize the returns within the realms of their comfort zone”. Some people don’t realize that everyone has different risk tolerances and I particularly despise it when people who have zero tolerance for debt try to impose their stance on everyone else (especially me).

Living Almost Large has a post simply titled “Jealousy/Envy” that explores of the best money lessons I support. You should never hate other people for their success, it’s zero-sum thinking and not the way to think about money.

Now let’s get on with the rest of the carnival!

Harvey from Fiscal Times presents Boots on the Ground about due diligence in reading annual reports and such when it comes to investing. While also on the topic of investing, the fire finance attempts to give some advice on which index to invest. The skilled investor also wants you to pay less to get more.

Lots of lists were submitted into this edition, check em’ out:

Sara Goldstein over at the Bargain Queen gives a lesson on bargain shopping 101.

Chris over at Wisebread preaches the seven deadly sins of consumerism (and the frugal redemption).

In a similarly themed post, Sagar Satapathy gives you the lazy man’s guide to budgeting laid in out in the lord’s prayer.

Priya Jestin of the 1031 Exchange Lowdown shows you how to be your own real estate agent.

While you’re learning to be your own real estate agent, Wealth Building Lessons has a post on how to invest in real estate.

Make your nut has an article on credit scoring about the seven year myth. Great article for everyone, not just recovering credit-holics.

On the subject of credit scoring, Free Money Finance explains why even Dave Ramsey needs to consider his credit score.

No Credit Needed explains the evolution of his emergency fund. Emergency funds are absolutely necessary if you plan to live without credit as unexpected expenses will pop up from time to time.

Last, but not least, I’d like to congratulate Mr Credit Card on his 10 years of marriage and his financial lessons from those 10 years.

Interesting observation at Wachovia Bank today.

April 21st, 2007

So I was waiting in a ridiculously long line at my local Wachovia yesterday. There were only 2 tellers working yet I noticed 3 tellers behind their windows. So I glanced over at the teller that wasn’t serving customers to see what she was up to. She had a huge stack of deposit envelopes and was opening them one by one, counting the cash, and then typing the information into her computer. I was like “what the?” I’ve always heard these envelopes get opened in a special room where at least two people are present and whatnot. I’m not saying she’s stealing money or anything but the potential is there if she’s really slick.

April 20th Friday Unwind

April 20th, 2007

“Friday unwinds” are a series of posts where I post things I find interesting that generally have nothing to do with personal finance or making money. Money and finance can’t on your mind 24/7. It’s friday and the start of the weekend… the market is closed, so RELAX and enjoy some cool stuff.

Escapa! This is a basic game with blocks where the goal is to move the red block around inside the black box while the blue boxes move around in ever increasing speed. The information on the page supposedly says you’re a genius if you past 18 seconds. I highly doubt this is true as the blocks move in rather predictable movements and you should be able to pass 18 seconds in 3 or 4 tries. Check it out here.

Escapa game and my score.

The Line Rider game is basically where you use your physics prowess to draw lines and a “line rider” rides your lines. Simple yet the possibilities are crazy. Check out this video below. At first I wasn’t too impressed then I tried out the game and realized the hours they must have spent doing this.

What those machines really do. (funny bathroom graffiti)

Oops, forgot to renew domain.

April 19th, 2007

Yesterday I forgot to renew my domain name, so the site was down for most of the afternoon/evening. Sorry about that.

EG is hosting the next Carnival of Personal Finance

April 18th, 2007

I’ve been on the waiting list to host the Carnival of Personal Finance for a long time. How long? I got on the list back when my blog use to be called “HJL Money Blog”.

Monday, April 23rd also happens to be my birthday. :D Get your submissions in by Sunday evening, 6:00 pm EST.

On a side note, I’m glad I moved over to wordpress as I can schedule the submission to be posted, rather than have to wake up and post the thing live (as how things were on blogger, don’t know if they changed).
